What is the Best Yarn for Socks, and Why?

If you've ever knit a pair of socks (or thought about it), you know that choosing the right yarn is key.  Socks go through a lot—walking, stretching, washing—so picking the best yarn means they'll last longer and feel amazing on your feet.  But with so many options, how do you choose?

First things first, you can knit socks out of anything your heart desires!  Although there are some yarns that are better than others (and will be explained below why), when it comes to making, you are the final decision maker.  That's part of what makes hand making items so great.  You choose!  Read on though to see what I think about it all.

1. Wool is the MVP

When it comes to sock knitting, wool is the gold standard.  Why? Because it’s breathable and naturally wicks away moisture, keeping your feet comfy and dry.  Plus, wool has a bit of natural stretch, so your socks will hug your feet just right.  No saggy socks here!

2. Nylon or Polyamide for Strength and Stretch

Wool is fantastic, but on its own, it might wear out too quickly.  That’s where nylon or polyamide comes in!  This synthetic fibre is blended with wool to add durability, elasticity, and shape retention.  It helps prevent holes, makes your socks last longer, and ensures they keep their fit over time.  If you love knitting socks that stand the test of time, look for yarn with at least 20% nylon or polyamide.

3. Superwash for Easy Care*

Handwashing socks might sound like a chore, but thankfully, many sock yarns are made with superwash wool. This means they’ve been treated so you can toss them in the washing machine without worrying about felting or shrinking.  A game-changer for busy knitters who want beautiful, low-maintenance socks.

My suggestion is to not put them in the dryer though and most of the sock yarns we carry here at The Wool Pirate don't recommend dryers.  Lay them flat to dry and gently reshape them while wet.

For yarns that are not machine washable, don't worry about extra work!  A sink full of water with a cap full of Soak wash is all you need.  Let your socks soak and no rinsing is required.  You will have clean, beautiful, hand knit socks again with minimal effort.

*Always check the care instructions on the label of your yarn ball for specifics.

4. The Right Thickness Matters

Sock yarns typically come in fingering weight or DK weight. Fingering weight is the most common for classic socks—it creates a snug, lightweight fabric perfect for everyday wear.  DK weight, on the other hand, is great for cozy house socks or boot socks because it knits up thicker and warmer.  Think about where and when you'll wear your socks, and choose accordingly!

Our Top Pick? A Wool-Blend Sock Yarn!

For the best mix of comfort, durability, and wearability, a high-quality wool blend (with a touch of nylon or polyamide) is the way to go.  It gives you the warmth and softness of wool, the durability of synthetic fibres, and the stretch that makes socks fit just right.

So, next time you’re picking out sock yarn, keep these points in mind.  Your feet will thank you!
