A Little Something You Didn’t Know You Needed
Posted on April 16 2026

There is something deeply satisfying about a project that does exactly what you need it to do. One skein. One afternoon (or three). A finished piece that wraps around your neck and stays there.
The Riptide135 Shawlette is exactly that kind of project. The kind you start on a whim… and then find yourself reaching for every day.
The Yarn That Makes This Feel Special
For this shawlette, I would choose Novita Laine DK.
There’s a calmness to this yarn that’s hard to explain until you feel it in your hands. Spun in West Yorkshire using carefully sourced fibres from the British Isles, it has that perfect balance of softness and structure.
It’s not overly polished. Not trying too hard.
Just honest, beautiful wool with a light, airy twist and incredible stitch definition.
The kind of yarn that lets the knitting speak for itself.
And because this pattern uses just one skein, it becomes a small, meaningful indulgence. A project you can finish… and wear… without it lingering on your needles for weeks.
The Story Behind the Stitch
Jennifer designed this pattern as a tribute to tennis injuries, of all things. The chain-like texture, formed by neat strips of increases and decreases cutting through stocking stitch, mimics the sensation of a muscle ripping through motion. She called it Riptide. It earned the name.
What emerges on your needles, though, is nothing so dramatic. It is a long, shallow triangle, worked tip to tip in one continuous movement. The texture develops almost on its own, and the neat edges give the whole thing a finished, intentional look that hides how approachable it actually is.
Construction Overview
The shawlette is worked lengthwise, from one tip to the other, which means you are always moving forward. No picking up stitches, no seaming. The chain texture sits within borders of smooth stocking stitch, and the increases and decreases are the main event, worked in repeating strips that build the triangular shape at the same time.
Stitch markers help keep the pattern sections organized, and a kitchen scale is useful for making sure you use every last metre of your skein if you want to push the size (although not needed at all). The gauge is not critical here, which takes some pressure off. A slightly different tension will give you a slightly different size, and that is completely fine.
Three stitch markers, a tapestry needle, and your chosen skein are all you need.
